President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to chair a virtual emergency ECOWAS meeting today in connection with the recent military coup in Guinea.
This was disclosed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugen Arhin, yesterday during the weekly Meet-The-Press held at the Jubilee House.
According to him, the meeting is to reaffirm the long held belief that the ballot, and not gun, should be the only legitimate means to effect change in the leadership of countries within the ECOWAS community.
“As you already know, prior to this particular summit, as chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority, he issued a statement to condemn unreservedly the events in Guinea; has demanded for the respect of the physical safety of President Alpha Conde as well as his immediate and unconditional release,” Mr Arhin said.
ECOWAS condemns coup d’état
ECOWAS over the weekend condemned the coup d’état. President Nana Akufo-Addo described it as a clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, whilst demanding the immediate return to constitutional order.
“ECOWAS notes with great concern the recent political developments which occurred in Conakry, Republic of Guinea. She condemns with the greatest firmness this coup attempt on Sunday, September 5, 2021.
“ECOWAS demands respect for the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, the Professor Alpha Condé, and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all the personalities arrested.
“ECOWAS reaffirms its disapproval of any unconstitutional political change. She asks the defence and security forces to remain in a posture Republican and expresses its solidarity with the Guinean people and Government,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
