The first lady with a pupil of the school
The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana education service to ensure that basic education does not only prepares pupils for examination but also helps enhance and develop their skills and talents. This, she says, is the means by which Ghana’s basic education system can compete with its compatriots in other parts of the world.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo said this at the 60th Anniversary Celebration of Achimota Basic School in Accra over the weekend. The celebration was held under the theme “60 years of holistic education: the pursuit of excellence”. She stated that the era of rote learning is long gone and should not be inculcated into the young ones saying it is only skilled and talent development education that can make them fit into today’s global village.
Academic Progress
The first lady expressed delight at the steady academic progress of the school and congratulated the management and staff of the school for their commitment and diligence to duty.
The First Lady, who is a past student of the school herself, paid glowing tribute to some past officers of the school whose dynamism, according to her, unearthed their destined potentials.
She emphasized the need to identify and train excellent teachers saying teachers play a pivotal role in the teaching and learning process.
Donation
The First Lady announced the construction of an ultra- modern library for the school by her foundation, The Rebecca Foundation, in fulfilment of a request put forward by Management of the school early this year.
