Perpetual Lomokie, a Deputy National Youth Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for immediate stop to the continued unprovoked attacks on women leaders who are just carrying out their constitutional mandates.
“Until when will we allow our institutions and the women who lead them to work freely without fear nor favour? Until when will we as a country respect women in leadership? Until when will women leaders not have to fear for their very lives just because they occupy a leadership position?” Ms Lomokie questioned.
A livid Ms Lomokie expressed her outrage in a statement condemning attacks and threat on the life of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, by one ‘Apostle’ Kwabena Owusu Adjei, of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Kwabena Owusu Agyei, who has since been arrested by the National Security and remanded by court, in a video that has gone viral on social media, rained insult on the person of the EC boss. In his outburst, Owusu Agyei further threatened to kill Mrs Mensa, if she does not shelve the idea of compiling a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 general election.
Condemnation
Ms Lomokie, who is appalled by the unprintable words used by the supposed ‘Man of God’ on the EC Chairperson, has condemned his conduct.
“What is more worrying is when individuals claiming spiritual authority with twisted HOLY SCRIPTURES indulge in the social vises and take cover under political parties to perpetuate attacks on women, particularly those in leadership to the extent of threat of death. This is certainly not the way to go and must be condemned by all well-meaning individuals, groups and organisations.
“It is in the light of the above that I rise to condemn in no uncertain terms, the recent uncalled for attacks on the person and office of the Electoral Commissioner of our nation, Mrs Jean Mensa,” said the NPP Deputy Youth Organiser.
She added; “I call on the opposition in particular to condemn squarely, the conduct of Mr Kwabena Owusu Adjei rather than throwing shields to defend him. One wonders what this political party seeks to gain encouraging such brazing misconduct and breaking of our laws and morals”
Bold women leaders
“I write today, as a woman and a leader, to ‘Apostle’ Kwabena Owusu Adjeis and their political benefactors that their insults, threats and character assassinations on a single woman has consequences on generations of young women and girls. It breeds an unfair indictment on women leadership in this country and further creates a phobia for leadership in our young women,” Ms Lomokie said.
She, however, urged women who are occupying various positions not to be despaired by such attacks on them, but rather remain focused and stand firm to change the status quo.
“Verily I say, let it be told to generations, that Ghana ever produced bold, shrewd and dignified female leaders who did not succumb to pressures that were crafted from selfishness and personal gains from opposition elements and their cohorts.
“On this script, it should be recorded that, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of the republic of Ghana, Mrs Jean Mensa is one of these gallant female leaders,” she stated.
