By Ebenezer frimpong The lower west Akyem municipal Assembly failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after two consecutive voting on Thursday as neither of the two contesting candidates was able to secure the required 33 votes of the 48 members as prescribed by law.
The 1992 constitution of Ghana provides for a presiding member for each Municipal Assembly to lead the assembly in its meetings as well as the execution of other statutory works.
The election which had to go into a second round failed to produce a Presiding member for the Lower West Akyem Municipal Assembly.
In the first round, Mr. Amegbley Zormelo, polled 28 votes while Mr. Kwame Oppong had 17 with 3 rejected ballot papers.
In the second round, Mr. Zormelo had 23 votes as against 20 votes for Mr. Oppong which fell short of the two-thirds votes needed of the 48 member assembly. The assembly is soon to announce a new date for the election.
Speaking to eveningmailgh.com,the Municipal Chief Executive Mr Seth Boadu said he was disappointed in the outcome of the election results.
According to him, the people in the municipality want a leader who will ensure its development.
He said the absence of a PM could slow down the decision making process of the assembly, as it is unable not take and implement major decisions.
Mr Boadu therefore appeal to the assembly members to try their best to elect a new PM when a new date is fixed.
An acting PM was appointed by the house so that the formation of the various committees can be formed.
