A copy of the dismissal letter

In what is becoming an increasingly familiar trend under the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, the entire staff of the Ghana National Gas Company’s Kumasi office has been dismissed without any explanation. The move mirrors similar actions recently taken at across the country, raising alarms about a broader political pattern of terminating legitimately employed workers across public institutions.

The Kumasi office of Ghana Gas, which was established as part of the company’s decentralisation efforts to improve service delivery and foster regional development, had been operating with a full complement of staff recruited through formal processes. The workers, many of whom have only recently been onboarded after rigorous assessments, were reportedly relieved of their duties with immediate effect, without prior notice or an official reason communicated to them.

Several affected employees have expressed shock at the development, calling it not only unjustified but deeply demoralising.
The incident has triggered fresh concerns about what some are describing as a politically-motivated purge of the civil and public service. Observers note that this latest action at Ghana Gas follows a similar pattern across various sectors in the country, raising concerns about deliberate effort to sweep out workers employed under the previous administration and replace them with partisan favourites, in violation of the principles of merit-based hiring, and also imposes costs on the state in terms of lost productivity, redundancy payouts, and reorientation of new staff.
