The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced tightened measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, following the lifting of the partial lockdown of the national capital.
There are fears that the lifting of the lockdown in the region may lead to escalation in the spread of the disease, especially in view of the absence of any strict means to enforce the precautionary measures among the general public.
Following an emergency meeting on Wednesday, April 22, the regional security council has issued a statement directing that the wearing of face mask is now mandatory for all residents of the region, as well as those who visit the region.
The inscription “NO FACE MASK, NO ENTRY” is, accordingly, to be visibly displayed at vantage points such as offices and lorry stations.
The enforcement of the directive takes immediate effect, according to the statement.
The statement, which was signed by the Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, also said there would be intensified education and sensitization on the wearing of face masks, as well as social and physical distancing by the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) in their respective jurisdictions.
No “special market days”
The statement also mentioned that there will be creation of satellite markets by the MMDAs to decongest the main markets in the region whilst placing a temporary ban on all “special market days”.
According to the statement, the MMDAs will also install and use public address systems in markets to educate traders on the mandatory wearing of face masks, social distancing and other directives by the President.
“Commercial drivers [are] to ensure all passengers wear face masks before being allowed to board vehicles,” it added.
