Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), visited 3R, a cutting-edge Japanese environmental technology company, as part of his study tour of Japan.
The visit focused on 3R’s advanced technology capable of recycling water and cleaning contaminated soil by completely removing harmful heavy metals, including mercury.

Mercury contamination remains a major environmental concern in Ghana, where it is linked to illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Illegal miners use mercury to extract gold, leaving rivers like the Pra, Ankobra and Birim poisoned, farmlands destroyed, and communities exposed to serious health risks.

A Technology for Healing

According to a statement on the visit, innovations of this kind show that with the right technology, determination and foresight, Ghana can restore its environment, protect its natural resources and secure a safer, cleaner future for generations to come.

The 3R technology is designed to:
– Recycle contaminated water for safe reuse
– Clean polluted soil by stripping out mercury and other heavy metals
– Restore degraded mining sites for farming and community use

Part of a Broader Japan Tour

The 3R visit is the latest in Dr. Bawumia’s series of technology-focused engagements in Japan, which have included discussions on artificial intelligence, satellite monitoring for flooding, deforestation and crop health, and digitalisation.

Together, the engagements point to a central theme of the tour: technology must complement enforcement in the fight against galamsey.
