Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor
Head of European Studies Department and Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Prof. Ransford Gyampo, and a lecturer at the department of Education, Dr. Paul Butakor, have been handed six and four months suspension without pay respectively by the management of the institution.
This follows the completion of investigations into the alleged ‘Sex for Grades’ scandal that broke last year.
The two will in addition, undergo appropriate training on the UG Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy as well as the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana.
“They will be required to receive a positive assessment after the training before resumption of their duties. They are also required to undergo annual assessment for a period of 5 years,” a statement from the university said.
Sex for Grade
Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor were captured on BBC Africa Eye tape documentary proposing love to undercover journalists who posed as potential students.
Prof. Gyampo denied the allegations and threatened to sue BBC.
The University interdicted the two over the scandal. The interdiction, according to the university was to allow for further investigations into the matter that went viral.
Earlier Clearance
A committee set up by the University to look into allegations of sexual harassment had earlier suggested that the allegations lacked evidence.
The Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee chaired by Dr. Margaret Amoakohene, kicked against the allegations against the two lecturers by the BBC.
Another fact-finding committee established by the University to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct had described the title of the piece as ‘deceptive and dramatic’.
The Committee, however, after examining available evidence, said it found credible evidence of misconduct against Prof Gyampo and Dr Butakor contrary to Paragraph 6.4 of the Code of Conduct of Senior Members of the University of Ghana.
In addition, the Committee found credible evidence of misconduct against Prof Gyampo contrary to Statute 42(1)(e) (i) of the University Statutes which states that no member of the University shall “(e) engage in a course of vexatious conduct that is directed at one or more specific individuals, and (ii) that is known to be unwelcome.”
In the light of the Committee’s findings they recommended that should the University be desirous of taking disciplinary action against them it could do so under Paragraphs 14.1, 14.2 and 14.6 of the Code of Conduct for the Academic Staff of the University or Statute 43(2) of the University of Ghana Statutes as amended.
