Ghana’s high commissioner to Canada, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, esq. has called on Ghanaians to give the needed praise to the Ghana Security forces for rescuing two Canadian girls who were kidnapped at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
Three Nigerians and five Ghanaians have been arrested for kidnapping two Canadian girls, Bailey Jordan Chitty, 20, and Lauren Patricia Catherine Tilley, 19. The two were held by their captives at a house at Akyease in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti region.
The operation leading to the arrest of the kidnappers and the rescue of the girls have been said to have been carried out solely by Ghana’s security forces. Ghana’s information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a press conference held following the rescue of the ladies stated that there were no foreign assets involved in the rescue of the girls.
However, some Ghanaians have insisted that the Ghana’s security operatives may have had assistance from Canada. They have questioned the ability of Ghana’s security forces to be able to be carry out such operations on their own.
People such as Franklin Cudjo of Imani Africa and Erastus Asare Donkor of Multimedia have insisted that, the Canadians were involved in the recuse mission.
But commenting on the issue, Ghana’s high commissioner to Canada Nii Ayikoi Otoo questioned the rationale behind the insistence of some Ghanaians that Canadians were involved in the rescue mission.
He stated that “I am surprised at this avowed hatred for our own successes.”
“Haven’t Ghana police solved many crimes in Ghana in the past? Don’t they know hideouts of criminals which enables them to conduct swoops? Will they have to rely on two experts one from France and the other from UK all foreign nationals,who arrived about 3 days or so in the country before D day,to locate hideouts of criminals in Kumasi.? What local collaborators do they already have in Kumasi for leads to conduct investigations? Did they fix the CCTV cameras that captured the kidnapping including the vehicle which took the girls away?Were they present when the guys gave warning shots to frighten people off and could have identified them subsequently?” He asked.
He therefore asked Ghanaians to give praise to “praise where praise is due!!”.
