NPP National Organiser, Sammi Awuku
The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has advised the youth of Ghana, particularly those in the northern part of the country, not to allow themselves to be used as “pawns” in the hands of the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the party’s allied forces.
The call comes after the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, had visited the northern part of the country to reportedly incite the people, particularly the youth, against the Electoral Commission, asking them to prevent the EC from carrying out the upcoming nationwide fresh voters’ registration exercise, scheduled to start on June 30.
According to the NPP National Organiser, the youth should be smart enough to appreciate the fact that should they allow themselves to be remote-controlled by Mr Asiedu Nketia and Mr Mornah to achieve their parochial interest, they will not be available when they (the youth) fall foul of the law and need their support in critical times.
Mr Awuku was speaking in the Savannah Region as part of a nationwide tour embarked upon by leaders of the NPP to prepare the grounds for the impending registration exercise as well as the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.
In furtherance to its preparation towards the December general election, leadership of the governing party have been touring different parts of the country to interact with supporters of the party, party delegates and the public.
NDC in the web
Mr Awuku, who is leading the team in the northern part of the country, further took the opportunity to explain to the youth, opinion leaders and the general public the need for the new voters’ register.
“The argument cannot be that many Ghanaians are against it. Maybe, you have the silent majority who have decided not to toe the line of the NDC in inflaming passions and also inciting people against the exercise,” he said.
He explained further that the NDC as a party has been caught in a web and unable to find its way out, hence the propaganda and threat of violence.
“They asked their supporters from the onset not to even participate in the National Identification exercise. Later on the leadership of the party turned around and secured their National Identification cards; the Members of Parliament on the minority side (the NDC) also secured their Ghana Cards; likewise the founder of the party, President Rawlings, and the leader of the party, President Mahama also securing their National ID cards,” he noted.
The NPP National Organiser added: “Now they are in a situation where they claim many of their supporters were not captured by the National ID. Meanwhile, they, from the onset, asked the people not to participate in the exercise. So how can you eat your cake and have it?”
Mr Awuku admonished people who do not have the Ghana Card not to be despaired, but rather take advantage of the mop-up exercise which the National Identification Authority (NIA) will be doing, starting from this month, to secure their cards.
Nationwide tour
As part of the national tour by the leadership of the NPP, the party has been sensitizing Ghanaians on the upcoming voters’ registration exercise and the need for every qualified Ghanaian to get involved when the exercise commences.
The party has also been training its constituency, electoral area and polling station executives on the dos and donts, before, during and after the exercise.
It has also been outlining the plans of the party going into the 2020 general election and informing members about the decisions of the party on the upcoming parliamentary primaries, slated for June 20, and the acclamation of the presidential candidate.
Divided into teams, the party’s 3rd National Vice-Chairman, Michael Omari Wadie, Deputy National Youth Organiser, Perpetual Lomokie Akwada, among others, led by Sammi Awuku, are currently in the Northern Belt, comprising of the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, North-East and Savannah regions.
In the Middle Belt, comprising the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo and Western North regions, the General Secretary of the party, John Boadu, is also leading a team, which include the 2nd National Vice-Chairman F. F Anto; the National Women Organiser, Kate Gyamfua; and the National Nasara Coordinator, Abul Aziz Haruna Futah.
The party’s 2020 campaign Manager, Peter Mac Manu, also is also leading another team, comprising the party’s first Vice National Chairperson, Rita Talata Asobayire, and one of the deputy campaign managers, Lord Commey, among others, in the Costal Belt, comprising the Western, Central and Greater Accra regions.
Members of the last team, comprising the National Youth Orgainser, Henry Nana Boakye, one of the deputy national organisers, Maxwell Lugudor Cofie, among others, are in the Southern Belt, made up of Oti, Volta and Eastern regions.
