Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale

Management of Shatta Music Productions, producers of Dance hall artiste Shatta Wale have rendered apology to all patrons of the 20th Edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) held on Saturday 18th May, 2019. The team also apologised to “viewers of the event around the world, organizers of the awards, Charterhouse Productions, title sponsors, Vodafone Ghana and all Shatta Movement fans worldwide for the unfortunate incident that happened” during the event.

The 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) nearly turned bloody following a scuffle between some patrons of the show.

The unfortunate incidence occurred when fans of dancehall artistes Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale engaged in near fisticuffs over the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the year award.

The confusion began when Stonebwoy was announced as the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year. For unknown reasons, Shatta Wale and his fans upon seeing stonebwoy on the podium got off their seats and moved towards the podium. Supporters of Stonebwoy who were not happy with the ‘invasion’ by Shatta and his fans tried to stop them leading to a brawl between the two groups.

In the heat of the brawl, a police man was seen a video in the possession of pull a gun and give a warning short. In the same video, Stonebwoy was also spotted with a gun on the stage. Report say, whiles this was ongoing, the security present sprayed pepper in the auditorium in an attempt to prevent a full-blown fight and Patrons had to run out of the auditorium as they could not breathe due to the pepper.

Several Ghanaians have expressed their views about the unfortunate incidence that occurred. A Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Kennedy Osei Nyarko has called for the two artiste to be tamed to avert Ghana’s version of the Notorious BIG and the Tupac Shakur incidence in Ghana.

But in a statement available to the, Management of Shatta Movement stated that “Shatta Wale meant no harm and considers this incident as unfortunate.”

Explaining what transpired, the management team stated that “As planned and communicated to the organizers on the morning of the event, Shatta Wale was going to sit amongst his fans in the standard ticket section of the auditorium. Due to circumstances beyond the control of the team, Shatta Wale arrived at the venue after the event had started and had been announced as winner of two categories (Reggae Dancehall Song of the year and Highlife Song of the year). This accounted for Shatta Wale’s inability to receive the awards he won himself.”

The statement further said that “After the announcement of the winner of the Reggae Dancehall Musician of the year category, Shatta Wale decided to reposition to the VIP section to meet his father and a dignitary who had asked to see him. A member of his entourage then suggested to him to join Stonebwoy on stage to congratulate him on his win in the spirit of unity, as he had done at the 2015 4Syte Music Video awards. He agreed and asked his security team to lead him onto the stage only to be met with confrontation instigated by Blakk Cedi, Manager of Stonebwoy.”

Shatta Wale and VGMA

The statement stated that “Shatta Wale accepted a call from Charterhouse to join forces to make the 20th anniversary of the VGMA memorable and has over the- period demonstrated his commitment to this course by performing at the VGMA Nominees Jam at Kumasi and the VGMA Experience Concert at the Independence Square.  Shatta Wale extensively campaigned for votes and promoted the anniversary celebration using his various social media platforms.”

They added that it will therefore “be very illogical for him to deliberately act in a manner to ruin and mar the same event he has spent a lot of resources to promote and urged his fans to attend.”
