Some widows at Akyem Achiase in the Achiase District of the Eastern Region have appealed to government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) for assistance to undertake income generating activities to support themselves and their children in school.
They stated that, in the past members of the extended family assisted widows and their children but such assistance has stopped in recent times.
According to them, there is the need for them to undertake their own income-generating projects in order to be able to cater for themselves and their children.
The widows made the appeal when the former TESCON President of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Akyem Achiase NPP Parliamentary candidate hopeful Samuel Okyere Donkor donated valuable items and monies to aid them.
According to them, they are engaged in farming and other trading activities but need financial assistance to expand their trade.
Samuel Okyere Donkor, speaking to the media said women are mostly the caretakers of the family and when the uncertainties of death set-in, they become the target of the deceased family; where they are mostly accused of being the cause of their husbands death. This act according to him has caused several widows to lose their livelihoods and called for it to must stop.
He noted that widowhood was not a curse and urged extended families to open up to widows in their communities to realize their potentials.
