The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda Constituency and the Chairman for the parliamentary select committee on Local government, William Agyapong Quaittoo has advised Municipal Chief Executives to work hard to send Development to their municipalities.
According to the Akyem Oda legislator, the various Municipal Assemblies have responsibilities of developing their communities and should not fail on these duties.
Mr. Quaittoo was speaking at the launch of GHANA SECONDARY CITIES SUPPORT PROGRAM (GSCSP) held at Koforidua on Tuesday 7th May.
The GSCSP is aimed at “Improving Urban Management & Basic Urban Services for Resilience” in 25 participating Municipalities including the Birim Central Municipality.
It is also to support government’s National Decentralization Action Plan (NDAP) to ensure effective and efficient management of urban centers and create jobs for the youth in the participating cities.
With the GSCSP, Ghanaians living in participating municipalities will have
access to efficient urban services such as better roads, education, health care, reduced flooding, employment generation and a generally well built and planned environment.
Mr. Agyapong Quaittoo said the success of the program will depend on effective monitoring and assured the World Bank who are the financial partners of the program and the general public of his committee’s effective monitoring job.
He congratulated the Municipalities that were lucky to have been part of the 25 and promised them of the parliamentary select committee’s support.
On his part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour in a speech read on his behalf appealed to the MCEs to provide the necessary leadership for the program. He charged them to ensure the judicious use of the resources provided under the program. He also advised them to be conversant with all the laws, regulations and policies relating to resource utilization of the GSCSP.
