The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has honoured veteran journalist Wilberforce Asare for his contribution to court reporting, legal journalism and public education on Ghana’s justice system.
Mr Asare, who is Head of Legal and Political Affairs at Asaase Radio and Dean of the Judicial Press Corps (JPC), received a Special Honorary Award during JUSAG’s 2nd Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference held in Tamale.
The recognition was in acknowledgement of his years of dedicated service to legal and judicial reporting as well as his leadership of the Judicial Press Corps.
JUSAG commended Mr Asare for his advocacy, accuracy, professionalism and commitment to responsible journalism, noting that his work has contributed to making complex legal and judicial issues more accessible to the public.
16 Years of Court Reporting
Reacting to the recognition, Mr Asare described the award as significant, saying he had dedicated much of his journalism career to reporting on Ghana’s courts and justice system.
“I consider this award an interesting one. Over the last 16 years, I have been reporting from the courts of our country and I wholeheartedly invested all my time as a journalist into legal and judicial reporting,” he said.
Mr Asare said the award also recognised the energy he had invested in leading the Judicial Press Corps, expressing gratitude to JUSAG for acknowledging his contribution.
His work, according to JUSAG, has also helped strengthen relations between the media and the judiciary while improving public understanding of court proceedings and judicial decisions.
Mr Asare was unable to attend the ceremony personally, with Asaase Radio’s Northern Regional Correspondent receiving the certificate on his behalf.
Journalists Recognised
Several other journalists were recognised at the conference for their contribution to specialised court and legal reporting.
EIB Network’s Murtala Inusah was named Overall Best Court Correspondent of the Year, while his Court Today programme on GHOne TV and Starr FM won Best Court Reporting News Platform. Other awardees included journalists from GTV, Angel TV/FM, Daily Guide, Daily Graphic and the Ghana News Agency.
The week-long JUSAG conference, held under the theme “Championing Staff Welfare and Technology: Anchors of Quality Justice,” brought together delegates from across the country to review the association’s activities and elect executives for the next four years.
