Mawerehene of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area and Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Nana Barimah Yaw Kodua Oppong, has underscored the importance of unity among traditional rulers, cautioning chiefs against engaging in partisan politics.

Addressing traditional leaders at the official inauguration of the Akyemansa Chiefs and Queen Mothers Association at Ofoase in the Akyemansa District, he said chieftaincy institution plays a vital role in national development, and its sanctity must be protected from political interference.

He explained that the framers of Ghana’s laws deliberately barred chiefs from active politics to ensure neutrality, harmony and respect for traditional authority.

“Chieftaincy is very important to every government, which is why the law does not allow chiefs to take part in politics,” he pointed out.

Justice Oppong attributed the weakening of the chieftaincy institution in some areas to frequent disputes and rival claims over traditional stools.

He therefore called for peace and collaboration among chiefs, stressing that unity remains the foundation for progress and stability.

He commended Dasebre Fosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, Omanhene of Odau, Okyeman Benkumhene, and President of the newly inaugurated association, for taking a bold step to unite all chiefs and queen mothers in the Akyemansa area under one umbrella.

Non-political association

In his remarks, Dasebre Fosu Kwabi explained that the association, originally formed in 2008, aimed to promote development and unity among the three Akyem areas.

He noted that the association was non-political, and pledged to work with any government to bring progress to the people.

“Where there is no unity and peace, development does not come. Our goal is to foster peace among our people and bring development to their doorstep,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Odahemaa appealed to the chiefs to establish an educational fund to support brilliant but needy students in their various communities.

She also encouraged citizens not to rely solely on government support, urging them to take personal initiatives that promote growth and self-reliance.
