In the heat of the attempts by the three-time-failed presidential aspirant of the Convention People’s Party, Bright Akwetey, and some of his loyalists, to undermine Acting National Chairman and Acting General Secretary of the party, some regional officers of the party have thrown their weight behind their leaders.
Regional officers of the party in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions have called on the public to disregard the information being circulated to the effect that the party’s elections in the three regions were not properly conducted.
Mr Akwetey, who is also the Chairman of the party’s Legal and Constitutional Committee, and Yaw Asamoah, Central Regional Chairman, have filed a writ against Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim Haruna, Acting National Chairman, and Kwabena Bomfeh, Acting General Secretary, and the party, prohibiting them from holding a national congress, which was originally scheduled for March, 2020.
The plaintiffs, in their statement of claim, prayed the court for an order declaring the 2019 regional elections conducted by the party as legally and constitutionally flawed.
They further sought an “order declaring the CPP Central Committee, as constituted by the first and second defendants on or around November 8, 2019 with the inclusion of the newly elected Regional Chairperson, as improperly constituted and a violation of the Constitution of the Party.”
Credible election
However, a statement signed by Eben Agbenya, a former Brong-Ahafo Regional Secretary of the party, stated that the party followed all the necessary laid-down rules in the conduct of the elections, saying it is unfortunate for anyone to raise any red flags about the conduct of the elections.
“As directed by the party’s Central Committee, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Secretariat opened nominations for regional positions in Ahafo, Bono and Bono East, extended period of nominations, closed nominations with filing of nominations and conducted regional elections in Bono East, Bono and Ahafo regions,” the statement clarified.
The statement further said “as a constitutional requirement, the Regional Secretariat wrote invitation to: Heads of Electoral Commission in the three Regions to supervise our elections and Heads of Ghana Police in the three Regions to provide security.”
According to the statement, the Electoral Commission “was present, supervised, and declared (acclamation) the regional elections in Bono East on the 29 September, 2019, Bono region on 1st October 2019 and Ahafo region on 2nd October, 2019.”
Akwetey, others bruised
The latest from the three regions supports the position held by Kabila, as the acting General Secretary is affectionately called, and the acting National Chairman that the elections held in the regions were credible. It also punches holes into the position of Mr Akwetey and co, who have been trying to employ various means, including the court processes, to undermine decisions and actions of the current leadership.
Last week, the Akwetey group were thrown out of the party’s headquarters, during an attempt to hold a meeting. The group, led by the party’s elected third Vice-Chairman, who doubles as acting First Vice-Chairman, Alhaji Amadu Tijani Abdul-Rahaman, had wanted to hold a meeting to discuss modalities towards the party’s preparation for the general election, the very issue which is now at the centre of the court processes.
However, Kabila reported the incident to the Police operations unit who immediately deployed men to the CPP headquarters to prevent the meeting from happening.
