The Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region,Fredrick Opare Ansah, has asked people who want to be rich not to consider vying for parliamentary seats.
According to the Suhum Legislator, though many think becoming an MP is an avenue to becoming rich, it is not that rosy as people perceive it.
He said Parliament is not an ideal place for people to enrich themselves but rather to serve the citizens with the little resources available.
He explained that the perception borne out of the fact that MPs drive in luxurious vehicles is erroneous, adding that the vehicles are not for extravagance but for MPs to criss-cross their constituencies and to be able to reach their constituents especially those in hinterlands and also to attend other Parliamentary duties with alacrity.
Opare-Ansah said, “My advice to anyone that is looking for money is to stay away from being an MP.”
“When I was Managing Director, I was earning several thousand of dollars a month and I had a decent life, indeed when I was coming to contest the primaries I already owned about five SUVs before I came to contest the primaries. Today I don’t know if I can boast of one or two SUVs because it is quite tough.
“I am just lucky to be one of the luckiest MPs who still have some investments to my name and so I am able to organize some events from my private resources for my constituents. By and Large, if you are aiming at making money then certainly parliament is not a place to come” he added.
Get-together
Mr. Opare-Ansah made these statement over the weekend during a get-together he held with his constituents at the Suhum main lorry station.
The event dubbed “the MP’s Kitchen’’ was organized to provide opportunity for his constituents particularly those with Kwahu lineage who could not make it to Kwahu this year to celebrate Easter in their home towns, to also make merry while in Suhum.
The event attracted several hundreds of the electorates in the constituency as well as some colleague MPs.
Free Health Screening
The program was preceded with a health walk and free health screening exercises which were patronised by close to 5000 people.
Free NHIS Registration
About 10,000 people were also registered for free on the National Health Insurance Scheme by the MP.
The Chief of Suhum, Osabarima Ayeh Kofi who was chairman for the occassion hailed the MP for organising such event with the motive of uniting his constituents.
