National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has endorsed her deputy, Hajia Safia Mohammed, to succeed her, describing her as experienced, competent and prepared to lead the party’s Women’s Wing.
Speaking on Peace FM’s The Platform, Ms Gyamfua said leading the Women’s Wing requires tact, experience and an understanding of the party’s structures, qualities she believes Hajia Safia has acquired through years of service.
“I will be vacating my seat, and the one who can take over, do the work, and do it even better is Safia Mohammed,” she said.
Ms Gyamfua said Hajia Safia respectfully informed her of her intention to seek elevation to the substantive position following her decision not to seek re-election. According to her, the proposal was subsequently communicated to the 16 Regional Women’s Organisers, who agreed to support Hajia Safia’s candidature.
‘NPP Needs New Faces’
Explaining her decision, Ms Gyamfua argued that the NPP’s current circumstances require new leadership capable of rebuilding its relationship with the grassroots ahead of the 2028 elections.
“The way some people in positions treated party people and looked down on them is what took us into opposition, and such people should not be allowed to lead the party now. The NPP needs new faces to lead it into 2028,” she said.
She added: “The standing of the party is not good at the moment, so let’s present someone who is clean and presentable to the people, and that person is Safia Mohammed.”
‘Experience to Lead’
Ms Gyamfua described Hajia Safia as calm but principled, saying she possesses the temperament, skills and organisational experience needed to manage the Women’s Wing.
She pointed to Hajia Safia’s progression through the party, from TESCON through the regional women’s structure to her current position as Deputy National Women’s Organiser.
Ms Gyamfua also recalled her own rise from Constituency Women’s Organiser to Deputy National Women’s Organiser and eventually National Women’s Organiser, noting that her predecessor, Otiko Afisah Djaba, supported her bid to succeed her.
She consequently appealed to delegates to support Hajia Safia in the party’s National Women’s Organiser contest.
The endorsement comes ahead of the NPP’s national officers’ elections scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Kumasi.
