Barima Asiedu-Larbi Awuah Sarpong takes the oath of office

By Mudasiru Abdul Yakeen, Akropong

The Eastern Regional Minster, Eric Kwakye Darfour, has urged Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region to discharge their duties with fairness for all manner of persons.

He has also asked the MDCEs to keep the interest of their communities at heart and always seek the development of their areas as their first priority.

“Once you are in a public office, it’s a different game altogether. You have to serve with commitment and dedication. There must be togetherness among the members, too, to ensure a rapid development of the Assembly,” he said.

Confirmation

The Minister was speaking at Akropong on Tuesday during the confirmation of Barimah Asiedu-Larbi Awuah Sarpong as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region.

Mr Sarpong was nominated following the President’s directive to the MCE for the area, Dennis Aboagye, to step aside.

Mr Sarpong, who until his nomination was the head teacher of the Okuapeman Basic School and doubled as the NPP constituency secretary for the area, had 45 ‘Yes’ votes from 46 Assembly Members who voted.

Also, after four unsuccessful attempts to elect a Presiding Member (PM) for the Assembly, the members on Tuesday elected Nana Asiedu Offei as their PM.

Both the newly confirmed MCE and elected PM were immediately sworn into office by the Akropong Circuit Court judge, Arit Nsemoh.

Hitting the road

Mr Sarpong, addressing the Assembly, assured them of fairness and readiness to discharge his duties diligently devoid of partisanship.

He said, “to be able to have a developed and decent Assembly, everyone within the Assembly structure is very important and I will not sideline anyone when it comes to decision making.”

“I learnt they are so many setbacks due to the fact that there was no PM to coordinate the affairs of the assembly’s sittings. But now that we have one, we will hit the road running by tackling education, which is a very key sector in the growth of any society and sanitation, to make sure that our people are protected from any form of diseases. I will also see to it that we set out all the committees necessary to help us discharge our duties,” he indicated.
