The new look of the DC Kwakye Library complex

Newmont Goldcorp, Akyem Mines, has refurbished DC Kwame Kwakye Library, a government Library complex at Akyem Oda in the Birim Central municipality of the Eastern Region. The refurbishment has given the library a new look and saved it from collapse due to several years of existence without proper maintenance. The refurbishment, according to Newmont, is to attract more readers and learners to the library.

Commissioning the refurbished facility, the general manager of Newmont Goldcorp,  Akyem Mines, Joshua Mortoti, said the refurbishment of the library is part of a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed by the company and its implementing partner, United Way- Ghana with the Ghana Library Authority, to promote reading culture in Ghana.

The refurbishment included re-roofing, painting and connection of pipe-borne water to the library.

Apart from the renovation, the mining company also donated over 1,000 reading books, a tricycle for mobile library, 30 chairs and desks to the library.

Mr Mortoti expressed the hope that the refurbished facility will ignite a life-long passion for reading within the community to pave the path to a brighter future.

Mr Evans Korletey, the Eastern Regional director of Ghana Library Authority, said a learning environment is a great asset and also offers a positive ambience to motivate people to read.

Nana Okyere Boamah I, the Ekonahene of Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, performed the tape cutting ceremony and unveiled a plague to commemorate the day, together with the Birim Central municipal chief executive, Victoria Adu.
