One of the sources of water for the communities
A NGO, As I Grow, has indicated that during its visit to more than 30 communities in the Eastern Region, about 99 percent of them did not have good sources of water for domestic purposes.
According to the NGO, it visited places in the Suhum and Akuapem North municipalities in the Eastern Region. The communities that were visited included Yaw Laga, Kweku Afum, Kofi Yanky, Miawani, Bana, Dzaka and Koransang Kese. It identified that all the communities lacked potable water.
The visit was part of the organisation’s commitment to helping deprived communities secure safe and potable water through its “Safe water campaign project in deprived communities”.
Call for help
Speaking to the Daily Statesman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Organization, Debrah Bekoe Isaac, said its research also showed that more than 6000 farmers do not have good sources of water to drink and for their daily activities.
According to him, this has resulted in massive decline in school attendance among school children since most of them have to dropout to help their parents on their farm due to the difficulty in finding water for irrigation and domestic purposes.
Some residents in the various communities said their major source of clean water for now is the rainwater, which is also seasonal. They prayed to the organization and other institutions to come to their aid.
Mr Debrah called on the government, individuals, philanthropist, institutions and other NGOs to come to the aid of the communities.
