Some youth of Asitey at the scene of the act

An employee of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Nicholas Partey, 21, has been arrested for stabbing his colleague, Haison Tamatey, at Asitey in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality of the Eastern Region.

The unfortunate event which happened at the premises of the Asitey congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, one of the NIA’s Ghana Card distribution centres in the area, according to report, occurred over allegations of extortion, bribery and sexual exploitation which starred up anger among the staff.

Checks by the Daily Statesman revealed that the youth at Asitey had expressed fury over the misconduct of the NIA staff in the area.

This situation led to a heated argument between the suspect and the victim, which eventually led to the stabbing of Tamatey (the victim) with a sharp knife.

 

Arrest

Some of the youth who spoke to the Daily Statesman after the incident alleged that the NIA staff were charging people GH¢40 before issuing their Ghana cards to them, a situation which fueled the anger.

Confirming to the Daily Statesman, the Odumase District Police Commander, DSP Thomas Agbanyo, said his command had a report from someone around 3pm, on Monday, about the scuffle between the two NIA employees and quickly rushed in to calm tension.

Meanwhile, according to the district police commander, the victim has been admitted at the Atua government hospital for treatment, adding he is responding to treatment.
