President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that plans are far advanced to make Senior High School a part of the Basic School structure.

In his State of The Nation Address, the president stated that a bill to that effect, and another one to regulate all public universities under a tertiary education law for the enhancement of good governance, will soon be presented to Parliament.

The restructuring of the Basic School to include SHS is in fulfillment of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s 2016 manifesto of redefining the the Basic Education School to include Senior High School.

The NPP’s manifesto on education stated that “We aim to shift the structure and content of our education system from merely passing examinations to building character, nurturing values, and raising literate, confident, and engaged citizens who can think critically.”

At point ‘E’ under education, the party stated that “The NPP will: redefine basic education to include Senior High School (SHS), covering vocational, agricultural and technical schools, and make it available for free on a universal basis to all Ghanaians.”

Currently, basic education begins from Primary One and tapers off at the Junior High School level, whose graduates write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) before entering SHS.
