The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) is set to inaugurate its Eastern Regional branch today, March 14. The occasion will also see the induction of interim executive members to oversee the affairs of the association in the region.

The ceremony will be held at the Bed time hotel in Koforidua, the Eastern region capital at 5pm.

The occasion will be attended by the President of the association, Kwabena Yeboah. He will be accompanied by other national executive members and renowned sports journalists.

Others to grace the occasion are the Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour, the Municipal Chief Executive of New Juabeng South, Ike Apaw Gyasi and the Eastern regional sports director, Gifty Horsu Fianu.

Opportunities

The formation of the Eastern Regional branch will give sports journalists within the region the opportunity to enjoy benefits members of the association across the country enjoy since its inception in 1968.

Some of the benefits include giving the journalists a platform to showcase their quality skills in the sports field, protecting their interest and ensuring that they are safe when on international assignments.

SWAG executive member and chairman of the committee responsible for regional mobilization, Otuo Acheampong, called on all sports journalists within the Eastern region to make it a point to attend the inauguration. He has also encouraged them to join the association so they will not be ‘orphans in the sports field’.

“SWAG is the mother of all sports journalists in the country. As a member there are several privileges to be enjoyed, for now it is almost impossible to get a Visa as a sports journalist to go on assignment if you are not a member of SWAG,” he stressed.
