Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has filed a legal action seeking to block the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
Her application at the High Court seeks to quash all proceedings conducted by the Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee, established under Article 146 to consider petitions for her removal. She also wants the court to invalidate the Presidential Warrant that removed her from office, declaring it “unlawful, null, void, and of no effect.”
This legal challenge arises in the midst of preparations by Parliament’s Appointments Committee to vet Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for the substantive role.
Justice Torkonoo’s removal by President John Mahama on 1 September 2025 followed an inquiry under Article 146, which found her guilty of misconduct, misbehaviour, and misuse of public funds.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has served as Acting Chief Justice since 22 April 2025, after Torkonoo’s suspension, and was formally nominated by the President in September to succeed her in full capacity.
Justice Torkonoo’s suit, if successful, could upend the vetting and appointment process currently underway.
