Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman

Some nursing and teacher trainees in the country have expressed their unhappiness about the nomination of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate of the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

According to the trainees, who themselves “Concerned Trainee Teachers and Nurses”, the selection of Prof Opoku-Agyemang, former Minister of Education, “comes with fear and trepidation”.

The their fear is premised on the fact that under her tenure as the Education Minister, trainee teachers and nurses went through several ordeal following the cancellation of their allowances.

In a press statement signed by the spokesperson for the group, Rebecca Owusu, the trainess said the decision by the then President and now candidate John Mahama to cancel these allowances, which brought untold hardship to trainees, was based on advice from Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman

“With her selection as the running mate to Mr. Mahama, we have no doubt that she will pursue her agenda once again, in the unlikely event that the NDC wins December 2020 elections.

As every Ghanaian is aware, it took the intervention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his able Vice-President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, to restore these much-needed allowances for us as students,” the statement said.

Vote against NDC

The concerned trainees added that it is for this reason that they are calling on their colleague trainees and other Ghanaians aspiring to pursue teaching and nursing as professions to mass up at the various registration centres to register and vote massively against the NDC in the December 7 elections.

“Please consider this call as a national crusade because it will define our destiny as students and future as teachers and nurses,” the statement said.
