The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), today embarked on a working tour of Girls-In-ICT training centres in the Volta Region to encourage young girls and emphasize the government’s commitment to digital skills and STEM education.

The Minister visited key centres including *In My Father’s House* and *RC Basic School* in Abor within the Keta Municipality, as well as the *Amissah-Arthur Learning Centre* in Ohawu, Ketu North District. Addressing participants, Hon. George highlighted the government’s target to train 3,000 girls and 300 teachers in digital skills across the country this year through the flagship *Girls-In-ICT* programme.

“The Girls in ICT programme is not just an annual event but a transformational initiative aimed at preparing a new generation of girls for the digital future,” the Minister stated. He further reiterated that alongside the girls, teachers are also receiving training, and schools are being equipped to sustain long-term impact and equitable digital access for both girls and boys.

Hon. George praised the support from local authorities, including District Chief Executives and Members of Parliament such as Hon. Kwame Garkpey of Keta, for their dedication to advancing ICT education. “This programme thrives because of grassroots support and leadership committed to change,” he noted.

The initiative is implemented by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), under the supervision of the Ministry, and forms a key pillar in the government’s broader digital inclusion agenda. The Minister emphasized President Akufo-Addo’s strong backing of the initiative, describing it as “a passion project for the President” and a critical tool for national development.

Drawing from personal experience, Hon. George shared, “My kid sister is an engineer, just like I am. I believe in the power of women in STEM. I want to see the next Farida Bedwei emerge from this group—young women who will lead Africa in digital innovation.”

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, commended the Minister’s visit and acknowledged the efforts of facilitators and stakeholders contributing to the programme’s success. He urged all participating girls to seize the opportunity to secure a brighter, tech-enabled future.

The Girls-In-ICT programme continues to be a transformative platform, nurturing the digital potential of young Ghanaian girls and paving the way for a more inclusive, tech-driven society.
