Former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Paul Asare Ansah, is attracting political attention in the Ayensuano Constituency following his increasing participation in New Patriotic Party activities and community engagements.
His growing presence has sparked speculation that he may be positioning himself to contest the NPP parliamentary primary in Ayensuano ahead of the 2028 general election.
Mr Ansah’s political career has largely been associated with the neighbouring Asuogyaman Constituency, where he contested several NPP parliamentary primaries.
After winning the party’s nomination in 2019, he contested the 2020 general election but lost to the National Democratic Congress candidate, Thomas Ampem Nyarko. Mr Nyarko polled 24,470 votes, while Mr Ansah obtained 23,232.
Mr Ansah attempted to return as the NPP candidate ahead of the 2024 election but lost the party’s orphan constituency primary to former National Youth Authority Chief Executive Pius Enam Hadzide.
Endorsement raises questions
The former GPHA boss, who traces his paternal roots to Ayensuano, has since increased his engagements in the constituency.
Speculation intensified after he shared a Facebook endorsement written by Peter Kwafo, identified as the Polling Station Chairman for the Coaltar Government Health Centre.
Mr Kwafo claimed that Mr Ansah had facilitated more than 220 boreholes in Ayensuano and highlighted his humanitarian interventions, including the reported payment of over GH¢40,000 to support an accident victim.
Mr Ansah introduced the endorsement by expressing surprise that the generally reserved polling station chairman had written it. He reproduced the message in full and concluded: “I have no further comment.”
Sitting MP consolidates position
The development comes less than two years after Ida Adjoa Asiedu became the first female Member of Parliament for Ayensuano.
She won the 2024 election with 18,229 votes, defeating the incumbent NDC MP, Teddy Safori Addi, who obtained 17,182 votes.
Since assuming office, the MP has undertaken projects involving healthcare, water, education, agriculture and youth empowerment. These include the expansion of the Coaltar Health Centre and the drilling and rehabilitation of boreholes under the “Kum Nsukom” Water for All Project.
Mr Ansah has not publicly declared an intention to contest the Ayensuano seat. His activities, however, continue to generate discussion within the constituency as the NPP prepares for its internal elections and the 2028 polls.
