The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Tuesday marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic Circle flood and fire disaster, a catastrophe that struck the heart of the capital on June 3, 2015, claiming numerous lives and causing significant destruction to property.

In a solemn commemoration event, Hon. Musah Ziyad, Assembly Member for the Amamomo Electoral Area in the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan District, reflected on the profound impact of the disaster and the lessons learned in its aftermath.

Speaking to the media, Hon. Ziyad described the 2015 incident as one of the darkest days in Accra’s history. “It was a traumatic experience for all of us, but it also served as a wake-up call,” he stated. “Today, we remember the lives lost and rededicate ourselves to building a more resilient and prepared community.”

Over the past decade, Hon. Ziyad has worked closely with the AMA to implement several community development and disaster prevention initiatives in the Amamomo area. These efforts, he noted, have been driven by the commitment to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.

The 10th anniversary serves not only as a moment of remembrance but also as a call to action. Hon. Ziyad emphasized the continued need for collaboration between the AMA, residents, and stakeholders. “We must maintain a culture of vigilance, responsibility, and preparedness. Disaster prevention is a shared duty,” he added.

By observing this anniversary, the AMA and Hon. Ziyad hope to foster greater public awareness about disaster preparedness and encourage ongoing engagement in efforts that promote safety and resilience across Accra.
