The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has asked the public to pay particular attention to the active cases of COVID-19 in the country as it is the major indicator of the government’s effort in the fight against the virus.
The GHS has stated that a focus on the active cases will show that Ghana’s Covid-19 cases are declining.
It explained that the cumulative cases, which most Ghanaians focus on, represent the total number of cases that is being managed, adding the country has been recording high recovery rates lately.
Addressing a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said: “We normally don’t focus on the cumulative positive count because the majority of them have already recovered. But the more important indicator is the active cases. In Ghana today, the active case trend is declining, and this is very good news. Our target is to keep it declining.”
He noted that when the citizenry continues to observe the safety protocols, the state can overcome the virus soon.
Gov’t effort
Dr Kuma-Aboaye further pointed out that in analysing whether the government is succeeding or doing otherwise in the fight against the virus in the country, there is the need to compare the country’s active cases against its confirmed cases.
“In this case, since Ghana’s active cases are on the decline relative to the confirmed cases, government’s strategies in eradicating the virus is paying off,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, disclosed that several countries around the world are adopting Ghana’s clinical recovery strategies.
He recounted the five measures which the government is undertaking to deal with the virus, which include limiting and stopping importation of virus, to contain the spread as well as to limit the impact of the socio-economic burden posed by COVID-19.
President leaves isolation
He further disclosed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo completed his 14-day isolation on Sunday, and will started attending to business from his office, at the Jubilee House, yesterday.
“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to resume out-home engagements from tomorrow after a 14-day precautionary self-isolation period. The President’s precautionary self-isolation was on the advice of doctors after at least one person within his close circle tested positive couple of weeks ago,” the Information Minister said yesterday.
He added: “The President has, during the period, been working from the Presidential Villa at the Jubilee House. He is expected to from Monday (today) attend to business from his office at the Jubilee House and additionally he will attend to some engagement outside Accra during the week.”
The Information Minister further announced that Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo has now tested negative for the virus following the latest test conducted on him.
Case count
Ghana has recorded 488 new cases pushing current active case count to 3871 with a cumulative positive case of 27060. Total recoveries/discharge are at 23,044 with 145 deaths
