The Eastern South Regional Police Command has taken swift action in relation to a chieftaincy incident in Asamankese, which led to six people being injured in a shoot-out. The incident occurred when a group of young people attempted to prevent a family from burying their deceased relatives in the royal cemetery over the weekend. The Police, in statement, said it received intelligence that some individuals were transporting guns and cartridges into a room near the chief’s palace.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they arrested suspects, and retrieved one single barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives. The suspects arrested included Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam and Buaben Richard. However, the situation escalated when some agitated individuals attacked the police with stones and other objects, injuring three officers on their heads and hands. The attackers also damaged the windscreen and side glass of two police vehicles. The injured people have been named David Odame, 28, Musah Gyakweli, 29, Patrick Ofosu, Emmanuel Obeng,18, Asamoah Sey, 18, and one other person yet to be identified. They are currently receiving treatment at the Asamankese Government Hospital. The police statement assured the public that the situation is under control and that measures are in place to maintain peace and order in the area.

“The public is assured of security arrangements in place to protect life and property so that residents can go about their normal activities,” the statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police David Fianko Okyere, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Eastern South Region, stated
