The Krontihene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyereh II, has stepped in to mediate the escalating dispute between Solomon Kusi Brako, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, and Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda.
The Krontihene called for an immediate end to sabotage and political infighting, urging both leaders to prioritise the development needs of their people over personal and partisan interests.
He specifically advised the MP to concentrate on his parliamentary duties while allowing the MCE to discharge his administrative functions without interference.
Allegations
The intervention follows days of accusations and counter-accusations between the MP and the MCE, which have heightened tensions in the municipality.
Mr Acquah had accused the MCE of aiding illegal mining activities within the area and reportedly influenced the Minority Caucus in Parliament to hold a press conference calling on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the MCE — an allegation Mr Brako has since denied.
The rift has generated intense public debate in Akyem Oda, with some residents expressing concern that the impasse could derail ongoing development projects.
Cooperation
At a press conference in Akyem Oda, Obrempong Saforo Kyereh II appealed to both political leaders to put aside their differences and work collaboratively in the interest of peace and progress.
“The development of Akyem Oda must come first,” he said. “Our leaders must work together to ensure stability and growth, not division and tension.”
He also called on the Minority Leadership in Parliament to urge the MP to cooperate with the MCE instead of fuelling mistrust and unverified claims that could harm the image of the constituency.
Concerned Youth
Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Akyem Oda has backed the traditional council’s call for unity, describing the ongoing feud as “unproductive and disheartening.”
At a separate press conference, the group appealed to the MPto reconcile withthe MCE — who, notably, ishis younger brother —and work together towards the constituency’s development agenda.
The youth commended Mr Brako for his developmental initiatives since assuming office, citing visible improvements in local infrastructure and community services.
They further called on President Mahama to disregard demands for the MCE’s removal, stressing that his leadership has yielded tangible results for the municipality.
