NDC Youth Organiser, Opare Addo

While the running mate to the 2020 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, claims the NDC administration, under her tenure as Minister of Education, did not cancel trainee teachers’ allowances, the National Youth Organiser of the party, George Opare Addo, has stated that cancelation of the allowances was a mistake.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, addressing some tertiary students in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, defended the NDC’s decision, saying the Mahama government did not abolish the allowance.

“I will come to a sensitive subject, which I think should be dead by now. We never cancelled the teacher trainees’ allowance.

“This is the last time I am going to talk about this because we never did that. You know very well that those who were on the loan scheme continued to enjoy it until they graduated. So, we never took anything away from them,” she said.

Apology

However, speaking on Asempa FM, in a debate with NPP Youth Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, the NDC Youth Organiser said his government’s decision to cancel the allowance was unpopular and affected the party in the 2016 elections.

“Everybody has the right to change his mind, so there’s nothing wrong if former President Mahama believes the decision was unpopular. If he comes back, he will restore it because it was an unpopular decision and we apologise,” he stated.
