NPP Loyal Ladies will tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14, 2020, march through the principal streets of Suhum to commemorate and denounce brutalities visited on them in 2016 by thugs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The ladies were attacked during a house-to-house campaign in the area to canvass votes for then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the area.
The ladies will also use the occasion to encourage females who are already into partisan politics or plan to join it not to be intimidated by what some unscrupulous male counterparts and opposition members might do to them in terms of abuses.
“Many underprivileged people who currently have the opportunity to enjoy Free SHS might not have had this opportunity if we the Loyal Ladies hadn’t persevered and continued campaigning for the NPP and Nana Addo, despite the numerous attacks and verbal assaults meted out on us during 2016,” Yaa Pinamang, one of the group’s organisers, said.
Attack
It would be recalled that some irate youth suspected to be members of the then governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), on October 11, 2016, assaulted some members of the Loyal Ladies of NPP during a house-to-house campaign at Suhum.
The ladies had to seek refuge at the Suhum chief’s palace, but the thugs chased them up there and assaulted them and some chiefs who were in a meeting.
Several of the ladies were reported to have sustained various degrees of injuries.
In October last year, the ladies who were manhandled were recognized and rewarded for their heroic contributions, which saw the then incumbent John Mahama suffer a humiliating defeat.
To recognize their contributions, the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, donated an undisclosed amount of money to the group in a move which has widely been hailed.
The MP for the area, Frederick Opare Ansah, also donated hair dryers to the ladies, with others donating sewing machines.
“This is a huge departure from the posturing of the party. This gives us an assurance that the party is now willing and ready to reward hard work and loyalty. We thank the First Lady and all those who contributed towards this gesture”, an elated Ivy Ackah, a member of the group, told the media.
“I’m in tears of joy today because I remember vividly how the well built men assaulted us when our only offence was campaigning for the election of Nana Akufo-Addo into office. Indeed, the victory didn’t come on a silver platter,” she added.
Some female bigwigs of the party, including the Minister of Special Initiatives, Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Children, Gender and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, and the Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, are expected to take part in the march aimed at halting political violence.
