The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its 2026 presidential primaries, as announced by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, at a press conference held at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.

Mr. Frimpong disclosed that nominations opened today, July 29, 2025, and will close on Thursday, August 28, 2025. The party’s presidential primaries are scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Prospective aspirants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of GHS 100,000 and a filing fee of GHS 50,000, both via banker’s draft to the NPP national headquarters. In addition, candidates must pay a compulsory development fee, to be determined by the party’s National Council. Nomination forms will be available at the General Secretary’s office.

Mr. Frimpong emphasized that the nomination process is in line with Article 13 of the NPP constitution, and outlined the extensive Electoral College that will vote in the 2026 flagbearer Elections. This includes members of the National Council, National Executive Committee, regional and constituency executives, polling station officers, former MPs and candidates, external branch executives, party elders and patrons, among others.

“This is a formal announcement to our members and the general public that the NPP is ready to choose its next presidential candidate in a transparent and structured process,” he said.

Akwatia By-Election: A Priority for Now

While the presidential nomination process has begun, Mr. Frimpong made it clear that the party’s immediate priority is the upcoming Akwatia by-election. He announced that the NPP has settled on a consensus candidate through a committee led by the Eastern Regional Chairman and Secretary, along with other respected party leaders and MPs.

“Because the committee was able to achieve consensus, there will be no need for parliamentary primaries in Akwatia,” he confirmed, praising the committee’s efforts and urging all party resources to be directed toward retaining the seat.

In a response to inquiries about whether presidential aspirants can begin their campaigns, the General Secretary clarified that campaign activities will only be permitted after the Akwatia by-election is concluded.

“We want all aspirants to focus their energy and support on the Akwatia by-election. After that, they will be free to travel and campaign across the country,” he said.

Looking Ahead to 2028

The NPP’s announcement signals the start of an important phase in the party’s preparations for the 2028 general elections, even as it navigates current political challenges. Mr. Frimpong reiterated the party’s commitment to internal democracy and national development.

The date for the Akwatia by-election is expected to be confirmed soon by the Electoral Commission. In the meantime, party executives have urged unity and commitment from all members as they gear up for both the by-election and the presidential primaries.
