The national communications officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress was picked up by police in Accra yesterday for allegedly bad-mouthing government.
Sammy Gyamfi, the suspect, is yet to be charged for inciting Ghanaians against the government during a live studio discussion.
He has, however, been granted bail, pending further investigations, after spending several hours in detention at the cells of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Reports say Police CID intelligence officers, numbering about five, picked up the NDC’s communications officer after the studio discussion at the UTV premises at Tesano, Accra.
Hooligans
Some members of the NDC, most of them hooligans, shortly followed the matter up to the CID headquarters in what appeared to be a foolhardy solidarity, ostensibly to demand the release of their party’s national communications officer.
“We are ready to sleep at the CID headquarters, if they refuse him a bail,” chanted the insignificant madding crowd.
Some of them even went to the extent of provoking the police officers, hooting at them and insulting them.
Disrespect to CID
He was arrested in connection withhis alleged involvement in forgery and attempts to spread false information in order to cause fear and panic in the country.
He earlier failed to honour an invitation by the CID after he initiated a legal action to stop the police from examining his phone records and gaining access to his Facebook account.
Mr Gyamfi filed the lawsuit at the Accra High Court, demanding an injunction on an earlier court warrant by the Kaneshie district court for the seizure of his electronic gadgets.
In the pending lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that the police “failed to establish any legal basis to have access” to his phone records “when it failed to show any probable cause that the Applicant has or is about to commit the alleged crime to justify the revocation of the Applicant’s right to privacy and the protection of same.”
