The founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress, former President Jerry John Rawlings, has hailed a protest by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council against his party.
The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council on Monday demonstrated against the NDC for incessant attacks on the person of the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council with the recent insult coming from the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Kwame Zu.
Kwame Zu had used unprintable words on the person of the Okyenhene and the Akyem Abuakwa traditional council during a protest march organised by the Coalition for National Sovereignty, a pro NDC pressure group, in Kumasi on Monday 16th September, 2019.
Demand for Apology
The traditional council at a press conference addressed by Okyenman State Secretary, Dan Ofori Atta called on the leadership of the NDC to within three days render an apology to the Okyenhene and Okyenman, perform a ritual pacification to appease the Okyenhene and invoke appropriate disciplinary sanctions against the conduct of Kwame.
They also called on Kwame Zu to personally render an apology to the Okyenhene and a “public recantation of the offensive words”.
According to the traditional council, should the NDC ignore the demands of the okyenman, “Nananom will not accord them any future request for clemency and redemption of their customary transgressions”.
Curbing insults
Commenting on the issue for the first time, the former President expressed ‘happiness’ about the action taken by the Akyem Abuakwa traditional council for barring “its teeth enough to elicit an apology from the NDC”.
In a tweet, Mr. Rawlings said “Let’s hope our party can curb the use of strong language by some in their political discourse.”
He reminded members of the party that the NDC, borne out of the AFRC/PNDC, does not disrespect people.
“NDC stands for natural justice, discipline and respect. Let’s not sway from these ideals”. The former President said.
