Fisherfolks in the Western Region, just like their counterparts in other parts of the country, are not observing social distancing as a precautionary measure against Covid-19.
Axim, Dixcove, New Takoradi , Nkotompo and Sekondi beaches were choked when the Daily Statesman visited the areas on Good Friday. The situation at Bosumtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour, in Sekondi, was even worse.
Fishermen, fishmongers, buyers and children of all ages were freely moving around and doing business as usual.
Although some of them interviewed indicated awareness of the adverse effects of congestion in the wake of Covid-19, they seemed not bothered.
Others also said they are safe mingling with people since there is not even a single recorded case in the whole region.
“They will definitely cross the bridge when they reach it,” one of them said.
Meanwhile, rumours making the rounds has it that a 45-year old native at Asakae, in the Effia-Kwesimintim municipality who returned from the United Kingdom in March, is secretly hiding in the farming community after suspicion that he might be infected with the virus.
