A government delegation, led by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and the Chief of Staff, Mrs Frema Osei-Opare, have visited former President Jerry John Rawlings to commiserate with him following the demise of his mother.
The former President’s mother, Madam Victoria Agbotui, died last week at the age of 101.
Sources close to the Rawlings family said Madam Agbotui had been unwell for some time now.
The one-time head of the catering department at the presidency during Rawlings’ era celebrated her 101st birthday on September 9.
The native of Dzelukope, near Keta in the Volta Region, marked the milestone in the company of Mr Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.
She had been firmly behind her son in all aspects of his life, including his political career.
Madam Agbotui first appeared in the political scene when her son staged a coup in 1979.
Visit
To commiserate with the former first family, the government delegation yesterday visited the Ridge-Accra House of the Rawlings’ to pay homage to Madam Agbotui.
According to Vice-President Bawumia, the visit was on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is currently in the Ashanti region.
He expressed the government’s deepest condolences to the former President and the family for the loss.
Some members of the government’s delegation also signed a book of condolence opened in the memory of the late Madam Agbotui.
