Construction of a new Cardiothoracic Centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is progressing, with project stakeholders stepping up technical engagements to ensure the facility meets the requirements for specialised cardiac and thoracic care.
The project, which commenced in January following an official sod-cutting ceremony, is currently at a critical stage, with attention focused on structural works, power requirements and the integration of essential utilities.
A recent technical working visit to the project site brought together officials from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, KATH, the Ministry of Health and ADB Ghana Medicals Limited to assess progress and review key technical requirements.
Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, who led the delegation, stressed the need for critical technical decisions to be taken early to facilitate the successful delivery of the project.
Chief Executive Officer of ADB Ghana Medicals Limited, Adann Benjamin Diaz, also participated in the exercise alongside technical representatives from KATH and the Ministry of Health.
Technical Works
Discussions during the visit focused particularly on power capacity, utilities integration and structural planning, which are expected to determine the long-term functionality, safety and efficiency of the facility.
The technical engagements are intended to ensure that engineering and healthcare requirements are properly incorporated into the project as foundational works progress.
ADB Ghana Medicals Limited is involved in the development as part of its broader operations in medical equipment, hospital engineering and healthcare infrastructure.
Mr Diaz said the project formed part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure for specialised healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The company believes effective coordination among engineers, healthcare professionals, planners and other stakeholders at the early stages will be critical to ensuring that the completed facility meets its intended purpose.
Expanding Specialist Care
When completed, the Cardiothoracic Centre is expected to expand access to advanced cardiac and thoracic treatment at KATH and strengthen specialist healthcare delivery in Kumasi and beyond.
The facility is also expected to enhance KATH’s capacity to manage patients requiring specialised interventions that depend on dedicated cardiothoracic infrastructure.
For ADB Ghana Medicals, its involvement in the project represents part of the company’s growing focus on healthcare infrastructure development alongside its traditional medical equipment and technical services operations.
Project stakeholders say attention will remain on getting the technical foundations right and coordinating the various components required to deliver a functional specialist facility.
Work on the Centre is expected to become increasingly visible as construction progresses beyond the foundational stages.
