Paris Saint-Germain are considering trying to take advantage of Sergio Ramos’ contract stalemate with Real Madrid by putting together a package to lure the centre-back over to France next summer.
Ramos’ contract expires at the end of the current campaign and talks over an extension have been ongoing for what feels like an eternity, yet the two sides have failed to reach an agreement thus far.
According to AS, the issue is that Ramos wants a multi-year deal to ensure he retires at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Real are only prepared to offer the 34-year-old a one-year deal with the option for a second.
Real prefer to cover themselves when it comes to extending the contracts of older players, having only broken their own rule to extend Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract a few years back, and it was this same dispute which saw Pepe walk away in 2017.
With Real standing firm, PSG are said to have approached Ramos’ entourage with a three-year contract worth a whopping €20m-per-year to try and convince the Spaniard to swap Spain for France.
For Ramos, however, it’s not about money. He is said to have told Real that he will put pen to paper on a two-year deal worth the same €12m-a-year he currently earns if Los Blancos decide to offer him that.
The problem for Real is that they fear Ramos may not be worth €12m in 2022/23. He will be 36 years old, and if he starts to pick up injuries or drop down the pecking order, the club don’t want to be paying him that kind of money – particularly while they’re trying to recover from the COVID-19 outbreak.
Ramos has found himself in this kind of situation before. Back in 2015, a move to Manchester United appeared set in stone, only for the centre-back to end up inking fresh terms at Real after all was said and done.
This situation does feel slightly different, however. With Real’s finances not in the best position right now, committing that kind of money to an ageing centre-back is easier said than done.
Talk of bringing in Bayern Munich’s David Alaba as a replacement has been rife. The Austrian would also be available on a free transfer next summer, and although he would demand a similar salary to Ramos, the fact that Alaba is 28 may work in his favour.
