Offices and some vehicles belonging to the Ghana Bauxite Mine at Awaso in the Western Region have been burnt down by workers of the company. The contract workers numbering about 600 were said to be demonstrating over poor working conditions.

Reports suggest that the workers went on rampage burning everything in sight and stalling vehicular movement at the mine.

Concerns

The Secretary of the Workers Union at the company, Selorm Heymann in a phone interview with Joydaddymultimedia.com revealed that some contract workers receives between GHc270 – GHc350 as monthly salaries with permanent workers earning around GHc1,500 as well as some bonuses as their end of year packages.

“We perform the same task as permanent workers do but it seems we are not considered at all seeing the great parity in terms of our conditions of service” he said profusely.

The workers are therefore calling on the government to intervene.

Management of the company are yet to speak on the matter.
