Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Atta
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, has disclosed that about 80 different road networks are currently being constructed in the Western Region, with plans to add some 25 more.
This, the Minister said, represents 1, 258-kilometre out of the total of 5, 289.7 kilometre road networks in the region.
The Minister added that plans are advanced to start the construction of some other high-profile road networks in the region, including the Takoradi PTC interchange.
This, he believes, will give the region a face-lift as far as road infrastructure is concerned.
‘Year of Roads’
Addressing the media in Takoradi yesterday, as part of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s two-day working tour to the region, Mr Amoako Atta said the government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the oil region gets its fair share of the President ‘s ‘Year of Roads’ benefits.
He said the government is committed to embarking on vigorous road construction across the nation, after inheriting abysmal performance in that sector from the erstwhile Mahama administration.
The Minister said when the Akufo-Addo government took over power, only 39 per cent of the country’s over 80, 000-kilometre road networks were in good shape, saying that explains why the President is always “bombarded with issues about roads wherever he goes”.
Mr Amoako-Atta added that the Akufo-Addo government deems the road sector, which constitutes 98 per cent of transportation, as pivotal in the socio- economic development of the country. He said the government would therefore open up all the 260 districts through road construction.
He indicated that other laudable policies such as the Planting for Food and Jobs and the One District, One Factory can only thrive if the country’s road networks are in good shape.
The Roads Minister added that the government remains committed to improving the road architecture in the country for easy movement of raw materials, human beings and equipment.
